Do I Really Need To Winterize My Boat? If you look at the most ­winterizing claims analysis over the last 10 years, the answer is a resounding 'yes'.  At its most basic, winterizing means draining any water aboard or replacing it with enough of the right kind of antifreeze to protect against the lowest temperatures your boat might experience. Freshwater expands in volume by about 9% when it freezes and can push outward with a force of tens of thousands of pounds per square inch. That expansion can crack an engine block, crack manifolds, split hoses, damage can occur anywhere there is fresh water and it can happen overnight.  Since 2003, we have successfully winterized Lake Norman boats without any complications.  We use biodegradable -50 antifreeze.
